Aspro! Nice to have you around. You ask some crazy questions. Sega would have lasted longer for sure. How different would things be, I dont know. Would having no PS stop Resident Evil from being made? final fantasy VII was an N64 game first. MGS would still happen. All the games that really pushed the medium forward would still get made. I just wonder if gaming would be viewed as less mature as PS became the mautre system, the one that was normal to have in college and adult only homes, etc.
I think Sony would ditch Nintendo after the first console and things would be the same as they are now.

I agree also the reason Nintendo ditched Sony was because in the fine print of the agreement Sony put something that gave them 100% of the licensing rights of games made on the SNES Play Station. That is where console manufacturers make most of there money through game licensing.

Normal to have in college? Dude there was probably more people playing Goldeneye and Mario Kart 64 in college than any PS game. lol

Well that era maybe but the PS brand became the "mature" console to have, mostly in the PS2 era. Any 20 year old male had a PS2, it was a normal part of life. A gamecube would seem dorky.

Yeah PS definitely took what SEGA was doing with having the edgy games and mature content to the next level, mostly just because their marketing is so good. But I just always found it funny that Nintendo had THE cool game to play at the time even WITH Sony and the Playstation having the image.
As for things being different....well, the Snes would have had a failed add-on called Playstation I guess. It would have ended up just like SEGA CD. The real question is, would it have made Nintendo turn the N64 into a disc system? Because that would have REALLY changed things. SEGA would have definitely stayed in the game longer, that is the main difference. Less competition would have made it easier for them. Once they had to deal with Nintendo, Sony, AND Microsoft, it was over for SEGA....they had no shot. And I think Nintendo always kind of respected SEGA to have their place, whereas Sony enjoyed knocking them out of the game.
I still think Sony would have gotten into consoles, but maybe this would have happened at the same time as Xbox instead. N64 would have just dominated.
Square and Nintendo might have a stronger relationship today if Nintendo stuck with the disc based console.

But we wouldn't have Paper Mario.
It started out as Super Mario RPG 2 and was developed by Square but when Square left for PlayStation Intelligent Systems took over and then they changed the artstyle.
But seeing as how Square suck ass today, it wouldn't matter. lol

This is the best observation. Though if you buy into the hype Square is back. With Bravely Default and their MMO secretly not sucking.
At this point they just have to prive to me the following:
- They are capable of not murdering Dragon Quest.
- They are capable of new IP like TWEWY.
This statement assumes that FF is dead and buried.

I wonder if...
RE comes out on Saturn only, so RE continues as a SEGA franchise. FFVII comes out as ... well a Nintendo game (under teh Playstaion CD paradigm). MGS... who knows where that would have landed, lets say Nintensony because SEGA would have been too arrogatn and reliatn on their internal parties.
Nintendo at that time was pushing 6-14 yers old, so does the industry "Mature"? Or does the Nintensony future turn into a 3DO like edutainment-fuck-fest?
I thin kthe industry "matures" as a notion of all the NES kids growing up and wating more. And Nintendo did get into this in the GC era, so I think it would have happened anyway. Perhaps with SEGA leading in that category.

I am not questioning you, but I want to know the truth of the matter. The really well researched books Game Over and Console Wars make no reference of this, so where did you read this?
To repeat, "I am not questioning you, but I want to know the truth of the matter"

Yeah Resident Evil and Tomb Raider would have been Saturn franchises for sure. It got the 1st games in each series as it is.
And as for gaming maturing, I think it would have happened anyway without Sony, because it was the natural evolution. It wouldn't have been so mainstream without Sony's marketing, more of a hardcore "underground" scene I guess you could say. Nintendo started maturing in the N64 days really, thanks to Rare with Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Conker. Hell, Conker is beyond anything on the Playstation in terms of shock value. Also the Turok series was a big adult stepping stone for Nintendo in those days. They just continued this into the Gamecube era.
Edge is right, SNES disc add on would flop. So Nintendo, who value fast loading games would have stuck with carts anyway. Sony having a flopped disc system may not have continued as a console maker?

I heard it from watching the show Icons that used to be on G4 when it was still good. They had a whole episode dedicated to the PlayStation and they mentioned it there.

I loved G4 back in those days. Thanks for the reference.
So if Nintendo had gone ahead with their agreed deal with Sony to create the Sony Playstation, a disc based system that would have nerfed the N64 and negated Sony's move to become a hardare provider what wuld have heppened?
Would SEGA still be around? Since Playstation would not have shelved the Saturn?
Would MS have entered the scene? (I am pretty sure they would have).
Would Sony have gone out of business entirely, given the Playstion replaced the Walkman as their non-commodity brand. (Given that Trinitron means nothing in a post-Samsung world)?
Would we be living in a PC-centric world, given that within the Sony Playstation the mature audience would have treated consoles as "kid stuff"?
