Saw the first 3 eps of Kids on the Slope

The beginning of summer, 1966; because of his father's job situation, freshman high school student Kaoru Nishimi moves by himself from Yokosuka to Sasebo in Kyushu to live with relatives. Until then, Kaoru was an honor roll student who tended to keep to himself, but meeting notorious "bad boy" Sentaro Kawabuchi starts to change him. Through his devil-may-care classmate, Kaoru learns how much fun it is to play jazz and finds the first person he can call a real friend.

It's like a non-fantasy Ghibli movie only not boring. They get together and play jazz, have some fun and other coming of age stuff. Pretty classy so far and far removed from the usual high school anime which is all over the top and crazy. Surprised by this one.

I was interested in Kids on the Slope just because it is from the same director of Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Space Dandy; I loved all three of those series so I figured I would like this one.

I still need to see it.

SUPER MARIO MAKER LEVELS:

  • SMB Mix-Up! (1AB2-0000-0047-5A7D)
  • Storm the Castle (77BD-0000-00E0-A9C0)

I knew about Cowboy Bebops' link, not the rest, thanks.

I rented it out of the blue, it showed up and I thought I'd hate it because of the character art on the box. Turned out to be a good series. Also the animation for the music playing scenes is amazing, almost looks rotoscoped.

I think this series is re-kindling my love of jazz music. It's really quite special to see the attention and love they give to animating the jazz sessions.

It's like two of my favourite things colliding.

Started Kämpfer

The plot revolves around Natsuru Senō, a normal high school boy with blue hair. One day he wakes up and found himself turned into a girl. A stuffed tiger "Harakiri Tora" comes to life and tells him that he has been chosen as one of the "Kämpfer", a female fighter. The Kämpfer are destined to fight with other Kämpfer. The story starts when he is attacked by an unknown girl who happens to also be a Kämpfer.

It's very light and fluffy stuff. Entertaining enough but not particularly good.

Oh fucking hell.

Anime Limited to Distribute Funimation Titles

This company just does expensive overpriced ltd edtions, screws over normal editions and delays everything.

So Kampfer has turned into an out and out Harem comedy.

The difference being that the main character is a boy that turns into a girl and that all the girls at school are lesbians. It sounds weirder than it is, its like a normal Harem comedy.

Finished Kids on the Slope, all is good. yes

Sentaro was a bit of a jerk near the end but it happens when school breaks up and people go their own way. It's a good slice of life anime that isn't boring and is pretty classy with a good and obvious love of jazz music.

Started watching Black Lagoon

Also started Golden Time about a stalker girl who follows her high school crush to college, despite his objections. It's like 15% comedy the rest is drama which stifles it a lot. Even so its pretty compelling and I want to see how it pans out but I prefer hilarious comedies which do this stuff far better like Nisekoi, Toradora or Love Chunbiyo and other Delusions

Finished Golden Time part 2 which completes the series. It's a grower this one.

Usually I don't like the drama elements in these kinds of shows and want more comedy but the drama in Golden time was what kept the series up as compelling to the end and more meaningful too. Good show overall, I didn't expect to like it as much as I eventually came to.

So I started and finished Blade and Soul, the anime based on the videogame. It's 13 episodes.

The original storyline revolves around a female swordsman named Alka who travels to seek revenge for her murdered teacher.

And, it's all right. I wouldn't ever suggest you go hunt it out or anything but I have seen far worse anime. It looks nice and modern but the story never really gets going.

But they seem to be aiming for a world record for the number of times they can say the name "Jin Varrel"

Started Arakawa Under the Bridge

Set in Arakawa, Tokyo, the series tells the story of Kou Ichinomiya, a man who has accomplished everything by himself. Ever since he was little, his father has taught him one rule: to never be indebted to another person. One day by accident, he falls into the Arakawa River and almost drowns. A girl by the name of Nino rescues him and, in return, he owes her his life. Unable to accept the fact that he is indebted to her, he asks her about a way for him to repay her. In the end, she tells him to love her, beginning Kou's life of living under a bridge. However, as Kou starts to learn, Arakawa is a place full of weirdos and all of the people living under the bridge are what society would call "denpasan".

And......... it's nuts.

Also completely hilarious. After the first episode I could not believe wtf I had just watched. It's more like a series of connected skits than a traditional coherent plot. And it totally works.

Also started The Eccentric Family

In modern-day Kyoto, humans live in the city, while Tanuki roam the earth and Tengu, the sky. The story surrounds a family of Japanese tanuki, the Shimogamo family. These tanuki have the ability to transform into anything they wish. They can change into normal members of human society or any animate/inanimate object. The third son, Yasaburo, enjoys a bustling daily life. He often visits Akadama-sensei, a tengu. Through him, Yasaburo is acquainted with Benten (Satomi Suzuki), a woman whom Akadama taught to fly like a tengu. As the story unfolds, the members of the Shimogamo family are still dealing with the foggy past that surrounds their father's untimely death prior to the series start. What more is that Benten is a member of a social group called "the Friday Fellows" who enjoy a meal of tanuki hot pot at the end of the year. So they must balance between living carelessly, maintaining relationships among other tanuki families, and not getting put into a hot pot by the Friday Fellows.

Seems decent but harder to get into. Sort of like a Pom Poko series but not as good. It did have a totally awesome scene where two giant lucky cat statues faced off with a giant tiger. Hope it picks up because the concept and subject matter are promising.

Started and finished: Another

In 1972, Misaki, a student of Yomiyama North Middle School's class 3-3, suddenly died partway through the school year. Devastated by the unexpected loss, the students and teachers behaved like Misaki was still alive, leading to a strange presence on the graduation photo. In Spring 1998, 15-year-old Kōichi Sakakibara transfers into Yomiyama's class 3-3, where he meets Mei Misaki, a strange student whom their classmates and teachers seemingly ignore. The class is soon caught up in a strange phenomenon, in which students and their relatives begin to die in mysterious ways. Realizing that these deaths are related to the "Misaki of 1972", it is up to Kōichi and Mei to discover the cause of these mysterious deaths and figure out how to stop it before it kills them.

In anime terms it feels pretty unique in that it's essentially an asian horror/ghost story like the Ring and I haven't come across many of those in anime.

It started a bit iffy then became very compelling and near the end it significantly upped the ante which at one point made me laugh out loud. But it was pretty satisfying in the end and the twist was appropriate. Good show overall.

The stuff they do to Gon is pretty hardcore.

Because of the character model you think this is some kids series, then things go hardcore.
