Agreed. Not to judge people on the basis of their appearance or anything.

After reading this...I still don't fully understand. So some dumb bitch slept with somebody for a favorable review...pretty sure this kind of thing happens all the time for all sorts of gain.  Then it turns into this big conspiracy that all gamers are white rapists? LOL...hilarious and full on retaarded.

BTW...why is it said the actor Baldwin from Firefly was the one who came up with the "gamergate" term? Just that term alone is hilarious.

The shortform is that the loudest of the group that attached itself to the #GamerGate hashtag used it to send death threats and endless harassment in response to the story.  Given the very niche nature of the games in question, it would have otherwise been a tiny blip in the neverending games journalism ethics discussion.  Instead it became an excuse for a lot of people to act horribly.

I just can't believe this became some kind of thing, even to the point that its still being used.

So now I guess anytime somebody says something dumb online and connects a "#" to it, it is going to start a giant stereotype campaign to describe whole groups of people.

Pfft.

I think it was a bunch of things that have been building up for a long time with regard to gaming all coming to a head.  You have foremost Gamers vs.

the Media
Feminism
Games journalism

Which was already a collection of things bubbling over from Anita Sarkeesian, but it didn't quite hit the tipping point.

And the unfortunate effect that had was the misogynistic portion taking out their frustrations with regard to the media and journalism on the women tied to them.  There is a serious problem there which is how it could get so ridiculous in the first place.  Unfortunately until there's a cultural shift, it'll be impossible to have a civil discussion about any aspects.

Funny this came up again because I read the story about the controversy surrounding Tim Schaefer's joke at a GDC event and then read it again because I could not figure out exactly who was offended by what anymore.

At this stage I don't know which side has become more offensive or vigilant, I've just stayed off twitter and avoided anything surrounding the issue as best I can, because as far as I can see it doesn;t really have anything to do with my interest in gaming.
