Though we know that Michael Fassbender is producing and will star in a movie based on the Assassin’s Creed games, that Justin Kurzel will direct the film, and as of this week, that the film will be released in the US on December 21st 2016, there hasn’t been any official word as to what the film will actually be about.
There's a lot to choose from, after all. While each game in the series fits into an over-arcing plot, they have different characters, different settings, and take place at different times in history. If the film were to adapt any one game in particular, it could be set in Renaissance Italy, during the American revolution, or in a Pirate-scourged Caribbean.
However, we're now hearing that the film is going to strike out on its own and set its historical sections during the Spanish inquisition. According to Film Divider, there will be other sections too, set in the present day. This is, after all, one of the conceits of the game series: modern characters use technology to access the genetic memories of their ancestors, and both stories unfold.
The site has some of the details of both time lines. Perhaps the most interesting point is that Fassbender will play a character in each. In the present day he’ll be a death row inmate, while in the main body of the film, the historical scenes, he’ll be Aguilar de Agarorobo, an assassin.
As befits a film set during the inquisition, Tomas de Torquemada will be the villain. Surely somebody will get Javier Bardem in to talk about that part? He seems to get talked to about the bulk of Hollywood's villainous roles.
Torquemada did turn up in the games, as a supporting player in a spin-off for iOS and Nintendo 3DS. It’s entirely possible that Ubisoft will develop and release a game version of this new storyline to tie into the film, or maybe the movie universe will be kept distinct. Perhaps we’ll find out at E3 in May...?

Ain't it Cool says that Batman v Superman might be split into two parts.
Part 1 will be titled "Enter the Knight" and release on October 23, 2015.
Part 2 will be titled "Dawn of Justice" and release on March 25, 2016.
This is still a rumor.
I'd prefer that over having to wait till 2016 for it. But it sounds like they want to milk it.

Netflix Is Dropping Doctor Who And Red Dwarf Soon, Here Are The Details
Expect more Arrow, The Flash, Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, Originals and The 100 – The CW has renewed the lot.
The CW is quickly becoming known as a home for high quality geeky programming. In particular, 2014 was a big year for its shared superhero universe – it successfully launched The Flash, rolled-out a two-part crossover spectacular and left Arrow on one of the most shocking cliff-hangers in recent memory, all before we reached the midseason break.
Now, the network has once again showcased its faith in interconnecting superheroics by renewing both shows for another season. The news came as part of a big announcement over the weekend, which also cemented the future of plenty more geek-friendly TV programmes.
As well as Arrow season 4 and The Flash season 2, we’ll also be seeing Supernatural season 11 and The Vampire Diaries season 6. The Originals, itself a Vampire Diaries spin-off, also got renewed.
The 100, which is currently doing the rounds on E4 in the UK, was picked up for more episodes as well.
A big day for geeky telly then, all of which we’re very glad to report. More news as it happens, on all counts.

This Trailer For Syfy’s The Expanse Has Zero-Gravity Sex And Deep-Space Mystery
If you’ve read this site with any regularity over the past year or so, you’re well aware that Syfy is in the process of upping its original content game exponentially. They have more than a dozen potentially awesome sci-fi shows in various stages of development, including everything from deep space adventure to alien invasions to time travel, clones, and more. Just the other day they added an Escape From New York-sounding series, and we just came across news of another one earlier today. One of the projects we’re most excited about, however, is The Expanse, and they just delivered this new trailer.
Based on the Hugo and Locus Award winning novels of James S.A. Corey (the collective pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), The Expanse is a thriller that takes place 200 years in the future in a fully colonized solar system. Detective Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane), is tasked with finding a missing heiress named Juliette Andromeda Mao (Florence Faivre). Unraveling the mystery takes him all over the galaxy, and he uncovers a vast conspiracy that adds strain to an already tense relationship between Earth, Mars, and the people of the asteroid belt.

The Strain Season 2 Trailer Fights For Survival As New York Burns
While promoting Black And White, Anthony Mackie has been building up the hype for Marvel's Captain America 3...
Returning to reprise the role of Sam Wilson/Falcon in Marvel's upcoming Captain America: Civil War is Anthony Mackie. He took on the part in last year's hit sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and it seems that big things are planned for Mackie in the Marvel cinematic universe.
Mackie has been promoting his latest film, Black And White, and was chatting to WTTG Fox 5 as part of that. And as you might expect, the subject of Captain America 3 came up. "I will tell you this", he teased, "Cap 3 is going to be everything you can imagine".
Revealing that he's getting a new costume for this one (presumably for Falcon, rather than just a simple wardrobe change), Mackie added that "Cap 2 was really Avengers 1.5 and Cap 3 is going to be Avengers 3.8".
Make of that what you will.
That said, Captain America: Civil War will again be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, and they'll be then moving on to direct both parts of the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. Their appointment to those movies hasn't been confirmed, but it's widely rumoured, and the announcement looks like it's just a matter of time.
Captain America: Civil War lands in the UK in April 2016.
David Heyman says Fables is still in development and that Jane Goldman will write
When asked how the adaptation was coming along, Heyman confirmed both Nik Arcel and Jane Goldman's involvement with the movie. "Jane Goldman is working on the draft as we speak," he told Spinoff. "Nik Arcel... did a draft, and now he's supervising Jane, who's doing a draft." Though Arcel has been linked to the project before, Goldman's involvement is a new element. Her past credits include co-writing "X-Men: First Class" and "Kick-Ass" with Matthew Vaughn.
Although admitting that "all these things always take longer than you want," Heyman explained what drew him to the project originally: "I'm drawn to stories about outsiders... They're people who are all separate, and how they ultimately have to form the community in order to survive... I just think the characters are so vivid." He also cited the challenge as part of what he likes about the project.

World War Z 2 Looks To Wipe The Slate Clean
Director Gareth Edwards starts shooting next year's Star Wars movie soon - and the casting shortlist is coming together...
Not only is JJ Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens set for release this year, but production is set to start on the next adventure in the series too. That'd be the standalone movie that Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters) is directing, that's set to land in cinemas at the end of 2016.
Rumours have suggested that this one is a heist movie set before Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. And The Hollywood Reporter is now saying that testing for the film began in the UK in December, and is continuing in the US now.
So who's in line?
Apparently, on the casting shortlist so far are Tatiana Maslany, from Orphan Black, along with Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) and Felicity Jones (recently Oscar-nominated for The Theory Of Everything). The three of them - pictured below - are in line for the female lead role in the next Star Wars, although as you might expect, details on just what that role is are non-existent right now.
Simon Kinberg is reported (albeit not confirmed) to be working on the script for this new Star Wars film, having taken over from Gary Whitta. And it's currently got a release date of December 16th 2016.

Roland Emmerich's Independence Day 2 is set for a summer 2016 release - and we've got some clues as to what's going to happen...
This post may, inevitably, have what turn out to be some spoilers for Independence Day 2 in it.
Director Roland Emmerich starts shooting the long, long mooted sequel to Independence Day this year, with Independence Day 2 mooted for a summer 2016 release.
Thus far, most of the recent chatter about the project has been to do with the casting of it, specifically that Will Smith won't be returning to the lead role. But over at Film Divider, a few other details about the film have come to light.
It reports that the focus will once again be on "different small groups in their separate, awful situations", and that amongst the characters returning for the new movie will be those played by Judd Hirsch, Vivica A Fox and - of course - Jeff Goldblum. The hint is that we're going to see some of the impact of the first film on those characters' lives.
That said, a new younger cast is also being recruited, playing characters that have grown up in the aftermath of the alien invasion from the first Independence Day.
Patricia Whitmore - the President's daughter - is grown up in this one, and she and her boyfriend sound like they're going to be sizeable characters. Said boyfriend will be a "hotshot pilot", and the pair will be around 20 years old. The younger cast are likely to "be the focal point of the action", and the filmmakers are also said to be on the lookout for a "comic relief sidekick".
That said, there's going to be a new love interest for Jeff Goldblum's character too, according to the report.
Back when Will Smith was still a possible inclusion in the movie as Captain Hiller, there would have been room for his daughter and stepson. Hiller at one stage was set to be US President in Independence Day 2, but that idea has since been scrapped. His screen offspring may still appear.
As for the basic storyline? It looks like we're going to get "the same generation of invaders against the next generation of Earth's defence". Humans will have researched and been using the alien technology left behind after the last one, and will be set to use it against the invaders this time.
Lots could, of course, change by the time Independence Day 2 makes its summer 2016 bow, but that appears to be the state of the project right now. You can get further details over at Film Divider, here.
