I've been playing a lot of Demon's Souls. Easily more than 25 hours in my first week with the game. That amount of time has allowed me to clear a grand total of three stages. 1-1, 2-1 and 3-1. I have found, in this limited time, that everything that has been said about the game's ruthless difficulty is completely true, and then some. And it's not because the game is cheap. Quite the opposite, actually. It's more honest and upfront that most other games around.

Enemies are always the same. They always appear at the exact same spots. They always attack you in their own predetermined patterns. If you do your homework, you'll soon find out their weaknesses and strenghts. The fact that after all of this the game still manages to challenge you at every single step of the way, punishing you with exceeding force and mopping the floor with you the second you let your guard down, is a testament to the solidness of what is probably one of the best and more polished features of the game: An impressive, complex and exceedingly well fleshed out combat system that puts many other RPGs to shame.

Couple that with a wide array of class selections, that can be further customized depending on your playstyle preferences; a robust selection of weapons to suit practically every need in regards to combat, whether that be melee in close quarters or long-range sniping, and everything in between, an equally impressive set of spells and miracles, and a variety of settings that ooze an oppressive atmosphere, and it's easy to understand why I'm hooked like this to a game that keeps kicking me in the teeth and spitting on my corpse.

Are you cheesing your way through any of the bosses or fighting them all like a man?

I poison clouded both the small king and king allant

I'd say half and half. I cheesed my way through Armor Spider via soul arrow, it was too early in the game and I was scared shitless. I meleed the Tower Knight until he got pissed halfway through the fight and started to kick the shit out of me, then I moved to Soul Ray to finish him off. I meleed Flamelurker but I Soul Ray-ed the Storm Ruler. Soul Ray-ed the Adjudicator and meleed Garl Vinland. Meleed both Maneaters, and the Old Monk summon, Soul Rayed the Fool's Idol, Old Hero. Meleed Dirty Colossus and Soul Rayed Leechmonger.

Considering my char is not STR/DEX based, I'd say I did alright for my first playthrough. My next build is going to be a melee one.

SL110 now. Beat 1-3 last night, rescued Biorr and Yuria, and learned Soul Thirst, which is essential for successful farming in some points of the game. Then I faced the boss with the most poetic name in gaming's history, The Penetrator. He was fairly easy because I had Biorr of the Twin Fangs assisting me.

I finally reached 50 MAG, so I'll have to focus now on INT to reach 40. Then I'll only have to worry about the diminishing returns point for MAG to call it a day and face the end game event, to proceed to NG+.

Shit, I'm hooked.

Just when I thought I was more than ready to beat the game, Demon's Souls whips out its wang and shows me it still packs a wallop and can, and will, beat the shit out of me at any time.

1-4 started out easy, with a couple of soldiers packing crossbows, I wipe my ass with them like the angel of death walking through puny humans, and I feel more powerful than any videogame villain...until I bump into 3 black phantom characters, one soldier with a Penetrator sword, one archer with a White Bow, and one Knight built like a tank. I manage to fend them all, kill them, and proceed....only to be roasted to hell and back by my old friend the blue dragon.

Shit.

Today, I beat Demon's Souls.

I haven't been this proud of beating a game in a long time.

Congratulations.  It's a good and rare feeling when you get to beat a notoriously challenging or iconic game.
