The Lost Levels is the real Super Mario Bros. 2 but it doesn't feel like a sequel, instead its like some kind of demented expansion pack of SMB1. I was shocked to find that all those evil Mario mods are based on this game because Nintendo never does anything like this. Was Miyamoto pissed off at someone? The game is pure evil, it takes what you expect from a Mario game and then makes sure that kills you. You will try to jump over an enemy only to find an invisible block knock you back down into your death. You will find warp zones that will warp you backwards, the game gives you a hole so that you may kill yourself instead. It's so demented that after a while I fell in love with the craziness of it all. The game is just SMB1 with new levels, it just feels like hard mode. I can see why they chose to go with another game for the US release as the US SMB2 is the better game. Still SMB1 formula works so well that it is still fun today. Is there any other game with controls that feel so natural, the jumping is perfect even after all these years. If you are a Mario fan its definitely a game worth checking out. (BTW I played the All Stars version, it allowed me to continue after each stage not world. The game would be impossible otherwise.) |
