Overall 8.60
I never played the original Goldeneye outside of some multiplayer matches so I won't be able to compare this version with the original. This new version is a great FPS that actually focuses on providing interesting gameplay scenarios and levels. It is not a shooting gallery, it is not a game where random cool shit happens everywhere while you simply walk forward.

You are James Bond and you can go in and shoot everyone or be an awesome super spy and go undetected. The very best levels allow you to go all Metal Gear and silently take out entire rooms of enemies without being seen. You also carry a silenced pistol which can lead to some awesome stealth kills, especially when you kill two enemies in quick secession. A cool feature is that when an enemy sees you you get a second to kill him before he alerts everyone.  Basically this means you sneak up on enemies and do a melee takedown.

If you are seen enemies pour out of everywhere and the shootout begins. The action aspect is pretty fantastic as well. Bullets tear up the environment, cover gets torn to shreds quickly making you move around a lot. Enemies have some aggressive AI as they constantly try to flank you mostly by just bull charging you. Most of the time you get nice wide open areas to play around in which is so much better than the linear shooters we have gotten lately.

All weapons feel great with the wiimote and as always it adds an extra layer of immersiveness not possible with controllers. Now they are not perfect, it can take a lot of customizing to get the controls to a point you are comfortable with. Even then sometimes you aim outside the bar and things get crazy. That said I will put up with the issues cause I feel so much more into the combat like this. When I do a quick double headshot it was my hand, my aim that did it, what a thrill. If you hate motion controls you can play it with a controller.

It is a wii game so it looks kind of crappy, I guess it is good for a wii game. Models are nice but I cannot stand Craid as Bond in this game, he phones in the voice acting as well. Plus none of the actors are the ones from the movie.

There is a full online multiplayer mode which blew my mind cause it has all the features you would expect from a major mode but it is on the wii. It has a great level up system, tons of modes, lots of stats to keep track of and it all works well. Of course there is classic 4 player split screen for old school parties.

The game is pretty long for a FPS and has many difficulty modes for some replay value. Overall the game has some cool moments but it never reaches the spectacle of modern FPS. When a level is a basic shooting everything level it can get annoying and a bit boring. Luckily most levels allow you to mess around and do stealth but I wish it was more consistent with those levels.

Goldeneye has ups and downs but overall it is a much more interesting kind of FPS than the big sellers. It stays traditional with the gameplay so don't expect many surprises. That said the level design and the ebb and flow of the game is keeps this game fun from start to finish.

Great review.

I love that its a FPS that focuses on the single player as I don't do the whole deathmatch thing, although it was a hell of a lot of fun in the original game.

I love what you talk about, taking down two enemies with a silenced pistol. You have to line up a head shot on one and then run in and chop the other fool in the face. Or just try your luck shooting the second one dead before he alerts anyone.

I think the graphics are quite good........ on an SDTV.

The framerate is the only thing that bothers me technically. It doesn't hamper the gameplay but the occasional jostle and nudge, or momentary freeze just looks ugly and pulls you out of the action for a fraction of a second.

Agree with you on the controls, they are good but nowhere near the best of wii shooters. You should try MOH2 just to try out the nunchuk lean and sniper controls. Or Black Ops, despite being a terrible port, the controls are sublime in ADS.

What you should try is playing the levels again but do things differently, like that bit on the snow level where they give you a sniper rifle and ask you to climb up the gauntlet. Instead go in with a shotgun and see what happens. It reminds me of the original Halo where different choices affect the gameplay.

IMO this game does not get the credit it deserves. One of the funner Shooters I've played over the past few years. Campaign certainly smokes anything Call of Duty has done.

Any FPS that offers a lengthy campaign with great level design gets a plus from me. Forget about all this multiplayer BS that I never touch.
