Well I finally got around to playing Gears or War, a game that came out in 2006 to rave reviews. I am glad to see that the game holds up well. Gears is a straight forward third person cover shooter that attempts to take you on a rollercoaster ride of action and succeeds for the most part.

The game begins a bit rough as all you are doing is hiding behind cover and gunning whatever pops up. The shooting mechanics are great, all guns have that weight to them that makes it feel like you are doing damage. All the cover mechanics work very well allowing for quick switching and maneuverability.  Basically what I am saying is that it plays very well.

After the first hour or so the game finally begins to get creative with its setpieces and that is when the game starts to shine. There are levels that play with light, making the darkness an instant pit of death. All sorts of new enemies begin to show up and new weapons makes dealing with them feel fresh. There is even a cool driving sequence thrown in for good measure. Gears had that RE4 feel of constantly giving you something new to fight or do. The majority of the middle of the game was fantastic, but toward the end I felt it went back to rely way too much on the cover mechanics and it became a slow crawl of simple cover shooting. I wish it had ended better but the games shows so much progress which I assume Gears 2 fulfills.

I did not play the multiplayer since the sequels offer much improved versions. The game still looks great, this was definitely a technical marvel in 06. Gears remains a great action game even after all these years. It has its ups and downs but most of the game is a thrill ride with excellent setpieces.

Great review.  I still think back fondly of the first Gears and the co-op time I put in with my best friend.

I agree, it is a quality game, it just becomes a bit repetitive and unimaginative.
