Last year a new metroid game came out, none of you cared. This year a new castlevania game just hit, you probably won't care again. I guess it's the price tag, I know free is a lot to ask for. So this is a fan made 2D castlevania in the SOTN style but with a bit more castlevania 2. It's pretty damn great game but with a few issues that hold it back from being as good as an igavania, still beggars can't be choosers, it's the only castlevania we are getting. So you play generic guy with a sword, it plays just like any castlevania game. This is a lot more simple than the igavanias as there are no souls to collect, you don't absorb enemy powers or anything like that. It's pretty straight forward and more like the old CV games in that regard. It does have this odd magic system in place that does attacks or buffs, it just uses huge amounts of hearts so it's only sparingly, mostly bosses. Other than that it's basically any CV game, you explore a map, fight monsters, gain new abilities that let you explore more and so on. The strength of the game is just how expansive it is, it's a large game that would easy be worthy of full price on the DS. Bosses are standout moments with some having cool mechanics and neat patterns to it. The game has some puzzles, one or two are a little bit random but they are nice to have. One of my favorite parts are the secrets of which the game is filled with and like any great CV game they influence the ending you get. I would score this game a point higher if it wasn't so reliant on backtracking. Perhaps this is the result of an inexperienced designer but somehow he thought having the player go back and forth constantly through areas was fun. It also doesn't help that the game is decently hard and any misstep will throw you back to the last save point which could mean loss of progress. So while the game world is impressive and there are some really cool areas and enemies, the way the game makes you traverse that world is annoying. Other than that it's all good. Great graphics, great music, the classic CV action and playforming that works so well. It will test your action skills, it will tickle that exploration itch, it will make you think during its puzzles. It's a great free Castlevania game, try it out. |
