Bastion became a fan favorite last year, winning almost all DL game awards. I guess I came in with expectations and did not expect this game to simply be a hack and slash, albeit a very interesting one. The most unique aspect of the game is how the story is told with a narrator telling the story as you play. Your actions directly influence what the narrator says. It works beautifully and really makes the game stand out.

Bastion has an incredible art style with excellent animation which creates a unique look to go along with the interesting storytelling. The music follows along the same lines with great tracks and a different style. All the technical aspects of this title are top notch.

The gameplay is of a hack and slash nature as you basically go through levels fighting enemies. You get one short range weapon and one long range one, you have a shield that if timed correctly can deflect damage back on the enemy and you have a roll. You also have one super power attack that you can choose, these waste a drink potion which can be found as an enemy drop. As a whole the combat system is elegant in its design offering just enough variety to the weaponry to keep combat interesting. Defense plays a major role as well, you will not be button mashing this game. Also the game has a ton of customization options from upgrades to all weapons, what super move you want, and buffs that increase the players stats. There is also an idol system where you can make the game more difficult but it grants you more exp.

The combat doesn't ever disappoint it just never feels like it grows either. All levels are basically the same thing, you just travel down a set path and fight everything that comes your way. There are special trials for every weapon which serves as the only diversion to the main quest. The difficulty never really ramps up, it basically stays at a good constant level. There is a huge lack of bosses and in a game like this bosses are always the best part. Here is a game with huge potential cause it has all elements needed for an excellent game but it totally fails in the level design department.

When I played the demo I didn't see what the fuss was about. It felt like I was constantly walking forward attacking. The narration was repeated constantly and didn't add anything at all, in fact I found it annoying.

Yeah I felt the same way and my opinion didnt change. I liked the narrator though.
