The Back to the Future game by TellTale is a game all BTTF fans should play. Using the voice acting of Christopher Lloyd and many sound alikes it creates a long lost sequel to this beloved franchise. The story is by far the main reason to play this game because the gameplay is very simplistic. As an adventure game it is a poor effort. The game takes you to a specific location where you have to solve whatever problem is there. This is usually done by talking to a lot of people, gathering items and of course using them correctly. No puzzles ever get too complicated, it is usually all laid out in front of you. There is almost no exploring as the game is always guiding you. In each episode there are at least two "action" moments where Marty has to accomplish certain tasks in a specific order to get out of the situation. These sections occur in a loop, meaning the opposing person (usually a Tannen)keeps doing the same animation until you break the loop by doing the correct action. In a game like this I guess this is the best way to pull off the action sequences BTTF is known for and there are some really cool ones that mimic famous scenes from the movies. Once again though brain power isn't needed much here. Normally the lack of compelling gameplay would bother me but with this game it does not cause I AM PLAYING A NEW BTTF SEQUEL!!! They nail the spirit of the movies, each episode hits the right beats. All the characters act just like they do in the movies, it seriously feels like an authentic script for a BTTF movie. The story takes place mostly in Hill Valley 1935 and you of course get relatives of all usual suspects like Biff. What is awesome about this game is that they were finally able to include George McFly again, who was removed from the sequels after Crispin Glover refused to star in them. Most of the time you are dealing with Marty's grandfather who is of course exactly like George McFly, so it feels like the same character. For BTTF fans the most compelling aspect of the story is that we get to see Doc's backstory. You see what turned him into a scientist, you learn why he is the way he is. He is at the heart of the time altering mess that fuels the story for the final three episodes and get ready cause this game makes BTTF2's alternate timelines feel like baby's first time travel. They really explore how timelines can easily get screwed up and this is what really kept me wanting to see where the story would go. This game is also very funny, it better be cause the BTTF movies have a wicked sense of humor. All episodes are loaded withe easter eggs and inside jokes for fans of the series. Almost every noticeable moment, object or person from the movies have some form of recognition in this game. It constantly brought a smile to my face with plenty laugh out loud moments. There isn't much game to be had here sadly but the story makes this game well worth it. People looking for a good adventure game stay away. All BTTF fans get this when you can. |
