Did some more Christmas shopping:

  • PS4 (500GB Black)
  • Bloodborne GOTY
  • Diablo III + Reaper

300 euro seemed like a sweet price point.  It's cheaper than a new Wii U would cost me right now.  Even if it's admittedly outdated technology, I'm unlikely to invest in PC gaming in the future as I will be devoting less and less money and time to this hobby.  I think I will be happy with just buying two or three major releases and since in most cases I won't be in any hurry, I will wait for GOTY edtions which will make games which are already massive in scope even more massive by having the expansions added.  So by the time I'm done with these two it will be time for Witcher III GOTY and/or Fallout or even Dark Souls III.

Seriously it is.  WiiU is at least 330, or 350 etc which is more expensive than the PS4 even if you usually get a game per-installed on it.

I didn't get any games this year. I'd say my family dropped the ball, but they got me some really cool gaming related items, so that worked out. I have enough of a backlog right now that I suppose I didn't need anything anyway.

I didn't have any games on my list.

I only had collected editions of DC Comics storylines and the Dark Knight Trilogy on Blu-Ray.

I got a Steam Link from my family in law (after I just flat out told them that's what I wanted).  From my kid and wife I got a 64Gig USB for my WiiU so I could download the XCX patches and I downloaded Fast Racing Neo, Never Alone and The Swindle from the eShop, the latter 2 because they were in promotion and were below 50% of the regular price.

Installing the Steam Link was a cinch.  I have it wired to my network.  All the hardware seems good quality, the power cord is insanely long.  Very pleased with the network cable as well.  It's less than a millimeter thick, which was a nice surprise as it meant I could just tug it between the cupboard doors instead of having to drill a hole to pass the cable through.  Seems to work perfectly too.  Due to a big WiiU backlog I only tried it out for about 10 minutes after installing it.  Played some MGR:R and it was butter smooth.

Only downside I can see so far is that there's no on/off swith, so it's basically running the whole time.  It doesn't have any active cooling or leds to tell you that it's on, but it is searching for pc's with steam in my network the whole time.

I had some frequent flyer miles that were about to expire this year. I did not have enough for a flight anywhere but after looking through Southwest Airlines redemption catalog I saw they were offering Mario Kart 8. So once again I have a copy of that game.

Yep. Definitely better than a subscription to Entertainment Weekly. Looking forward to finally checking out the DLC levels.

That's still putting too much pressure on everyone else.

I grabbed Darkest Dungeon in the Steam sale. It's a neat little dungeon crawler that had a feature that requires you to balance your team's personalities.  Some members won't get along, and during periods of high stress caused by fear, hunger, or injury that can be more difficult than dealing with the Monsters.

You only bought that so you can replay DMC2 in glorious HD, may as well admit it!
